Like a game of hot potato, last month the House of Representatives tossed a budget bill to the Senate that is packed with harmful cuts to our nation鈥檚 economy and wellbeing. The budget was designed to create greater tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and corporations and is the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor to the wealthy in the history of our nation.
This new budget would add trillions of dollars more to our existing deficit despite slashing up to $163 billion from current spending. But do these cuts really matter? Yes, they do! The bill would eliminate investments in climate, science, technology, education, health, medical research and care, housing, the arts 鈥 every area of endeavor where American enterprise, education and creativity has made us, in Reagan鈥檚 words, 鈥淭he shining city on the hill.鈥

One critical area that would be slashed in the bill is the clean energy tax credits 鈥 legislation that has been very beneficial to 蜜聊直播鈥檚 economy by kickstarting investments in new energy and transportation technology 鈥 so good that US Rep. Ciscomani twice wrote to Republican leadership, asking them to leave the tax credits in place.
Why did he think these credits were so important?
It鈥檚 because companies with names like Clenera, Westline Solar, Serrano Solar, Babacomari Solar, Ecobat and Cirba have already or are in the process of investing $1.8 billion in AZ CD6 for development of solar, storage, batteries, recycling and even hydrogen production. These credits, designed to boost clean energy power and manufacturing across the U.S., have benefited 蜜聊直播 to the tune of $25 billion in investments and 24,000 jobs since 2022, numbers projected to increase over the next ten years, adding $40 billion to our state鈥檚 economy.
This success story could quickly unravel. Cuts to the tax credits will hurt us if they become law. Experts warn that these changes will raise energy costs for American households, increase health risks from pollution (asthma, heart failure, dementia, increased hospitalizations) and threaten a growing 蜜聊直播 economy.
The legislation is now in the Senate鈥檚 hands. If the cuts become law, 蜜聊直播 ratepayers will face electricity prices that could be 7% higher in the coming years. Phasing out tax credits that support clean power 鈥 production and manufacturing 鈥 will jeopardize long-term projects with accompanying high-paying jobs and increased tax base for AZ District 6, from Cochise County to Eloy and Casa Grande.
Individuals and homeowners will pay a hefty price, too. This 鈥渂ig, beautiful bill鈥 plans to end clean vehicle tax credits for new and used cars and trucks, home efficiency upgrades such as heat pump HVAC systems, and even solar panels for 蜜聊直播, businesses, and schools 鈥 all by the end of 2025. As temperatures continue to soar, 蜜聊直播ns will pay a dear price for losing the tax credits and foregoing those improvements. With fewer people able to afford air conditioning, heat related illness and fatalities will rise. While the budget targets money it calls the 鈥淕reen New Scam鈥 there鈥檚 no scam in helping lower income households pay for affordable AC. In addition, reinforcing our electric grid is key to survival for everyone! We need reliable, clean power and battery storage for affordable electricity that will stand the test of heat waves and data centers.
Four Republican Senators recently called on Congress to scale back these cuts, saying repeal would 鈥渓ead to significant disruptions for the American people and weaken our position as a global energy leader.鈥 The U.S. already leads the world in energy production with 94% of all new energy produced in 2024 being clean. Let鈥檚 keep that up 鈥 especially with the demand for electricity skyrocketing.
The numbers are clear: clean energy tax credits are working for us in Tucson and all of 蜜聊直播. It would be reckless for the Senate to eliminate the clean energy tax credits 鈥 the price we鈥檒l pay is economic harm, loss of jobs, worse air, poorer health, increased deaths, reduced power security and power blackouts. Urge Senators Kelly and Gallego & Rep. Ciscomani to work with their colleagues to protect clean energy tax credits.
