ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥¡¯s Koa Peat had 12 points and nine rebounds to help 109-76 in the FIBA U19 World Cup final Sunday and become the first American player to win four national junior team gold medals.
According to FIBA, Peat is also the only player anywhere to win three junior World Cup golds, having won them at the 2022 and 2024 U17 World Cups in addition to winning gold at the 2023 U16 Americas Championships. His experience made it no surprise he was named captain for this year¡¯s U19 team.
Meanwhile, UA coach Tommy Lloyd picked up his second gold medal after leading USA Basketball¡¯s U18 team to the FIBA U18 AmeriCup championship last summer before picking up the top prize Sunday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Lloyd¡¯s U19 team not only won its seven World Cup games by an average of 39.0 points, but also set a FIBA U19 World Cup scoring record by averaging 114.6 points per game. Yugoslavia¡¯s 1987 team held the previous record with an average of 108.9 points.

It was also a redemptive moment of sorts for USA Basketball, which finished fourth when the FIBA U19 Tournament was last played in 2023. The Americans struggled only in a 108-102 quarterfinal win over Canada on Friday.
¡°Just so proud of the guys,¡± Lloyd said, according to audio provided by USA Basketball. ¡°They responded. Incredible effort and they were really consistent over this three week period.
¡°We had one little lapse against Canada, and Canada deserves a lot of credit for how they play, but it kind of got our attention. Once we were able to get the guys to refocus and understand the task at hand ¡ª we had to win two more games and play 80 good minutes ¡ª I thought the guys were amazing.¡±
USA rebounded from the scare against Canada by blowing out New Zealand 120-64 in the semifinals on Saturday and then pulling away from a German team that had been undefeated while reaching its first-ever U19 championship game.

USA managed a 24-23 lead over Germany at the end of the first quarter when Tyran Stokes drove in for a layup with a second left, then went on a 14-5 run to start the second quarter and took a 56-47 halftime lead.
Peat had nine of his points and eight rebounds in the first half, then hit two free throws 10 seconds into the third quarter after Germany¡¯s Eric Reibe elbowed him in the lower neck and was called for an unsportsmanlike foul. The Americans took advantage of the moment, going on a 24-5 run to start the third quarter and were never challenged again.
USA wound up with six players in double-figure scoring, while Michigan forward Morez Johnson, Jr. led the Americans in both scoring (15 points) and rebounding (10). USA shot 56.5% overall while holding Germany to 41.8%.
Big man Hannes Steinbach had 19 points and seven rebounds for Germany while guard Christian Anderson had 18 points, five rebounds and nine assists as he played against his Texas Tech coach, Grant McCasland, who was serving as an assistant to Lloyd on Team USA¡¯s staff.

Dybantsa was named the U19 World Cup MVP while the ¡°All-Star Five¡± also included Brown, Anderson, Steinbach, and Slovenia¡¯s Zak Smrekar.
While the USA team that finished fourth in the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup was led in part by UA center Tobe Awaka, who averaged 11.6 points and 10.6 rebounds that summer, Lloyd¡¯s 2025 crew was more talented overall.
The 2025 Americans featured several potential NBA lottery picks in 2026, including BYU¡¯s AJ Dybantsa, Louisville¡¯s Mikel Brown, Duke forward Nik Khamenia and Peat, who is ranked No. 18 in . USA also had three players who are already being projected in the 2027 NBA lottery: forward Tyran Stokes, guard Brandon McCoy and forward Caleb Holt.
Lloyd said he was grateful to USA players for sacrificing the three weeks needed to train for and play in the World Cup, and to USA Basketball for giving him a chance to coach the team. The U19 event effectively concluded Lloyd¡¯s two-year commitment as coach of USA Basketball¡¯s top junior teams.
