Jim Flannery, who coached Salpointe Catholic to boys state golf championships in 1981 and 2004, and was the Lancers’ head boys basketball coach from 1977-1993, died Saturday in Tucson. He was 77.
Flannery was a basketball and track standout at Salpointe from 1964-66 and graduated from the UA in 1973. His coaching career included a stint as Hall of Fame coach Dick McConnell’s assistant at Sahuaro High School before returning to Salpointe in 1974 where he coached the freshmen basketball and football teams before becoming head basketball coach in ‘77.

Under Flannery, the Lancers won 18 region basketball championships and reached the state semifinals three times. He was the ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Daily Star’s basketball coach of the year in 1986 and 1991. Flannery was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
