Trump Booed By Fans As Chelsea Capture Club World Cup

  • Updated

President Donald Trump was subject to widespread boos by the crowd during the Club World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Trump was in attendance as Chelsea defeated European champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 thanks to a Cole Palmer double and a Joao Pedro goal. The president received his first boos from fans when he appeared on the stadium screens during the playing of the national anthem.  Trump once again received a hostile reception as he walked out onto the pitch with FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to present the medals and individual awards. The 79-year-old also presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James; however, despite efforts by Infantino to escort Trump off the podium, the latter decided to stay for the trophy lift. “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,” said Levi Colwill, Chelsea defender. Trump’s antics were front and center on a day where Chelsea proved to be too strong for PSG under the sweltering heat in East Rutherford. The English outfit started fast, with Palmer opening the scoring in the 22nd minute before adding his second of the game just eight minutes later. The 23-year-old was heavily involved in Chelsea’s third goal, squeezing a pass through the Parisian’s defense to set up Joao Pedro, who lifted the ball over goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG were unable to force themselves back into the encounter and grew frustrated as the game went on, with midfielder Joao Neves receiving a red card for a hair pull on Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella. The heat appeared to also get to PSG head coach Luis Enrique, who appeared to hit Joao Pedro after the final whistle as players and staff on both sides got into a heated scuffle. The win is Chelsea’s second world title and also crowns the London club as the first winners of the revamped Club World Cup.
