Scrolling Your Phone On The Toilet Increases Risk Of Hemorrhoids
Using your smartphone on the toilet might seem harmless, but new research suggests it could increase your risk of developing painful hemorrhoids. A study in the journal PLOS One found that those who use their phones while on the toilet were 46% more likely to have hemorrhoids than non-users. Researchers say sitting without pelvic support increases pressure on hemorrhoidal cushions, which may become swollen over time. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around the anus that can itch, hurt, or bleed. Contrary to past belief, smartphone users didn’t strain more, but the extra time spent sitting may be the bigger problem. The study concluded that passive scrolling prolongs pressure on veins, causing them to bulge into hemorrhoids. The study recommends limiting phone use on the toilet to under five minutes.
