A 17-year-old boy will be prosecuted as an adult in the alleged stabbing of a girl Wednesday on the University of ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ campus, court records show.
Andreys Arias, a senior at Tucson High School, has been charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm for allegedly using a kitchen knife to stab a 17-year-old girl seven times following an argument at the UA’s main library. The unidentified girl was listed in a court document as being Arias’ girlfriend for the past three years.
Police have withheld his name, but the Star is naming Arias due to the seriousness of the allegation and because he is being prosecuted as an adult.
The girl suffered multiple lacerations to her face, chest and eye in the stabbing, the Pima County Attorney’s Office said. The attack caused major blood loss, a punctured lung and a possible loss of vision.

Several people witnessed the incident and a bystander intervened, according to a probable cause affidavit filed initially filed in Pima County Juvenile Court. Still, Arias continued to try and attack the victim, the document said.
Arias eventually fled but turned himself into police a short time later.
During his initial court appearance Thursday morning, prosecutors asked that Arias be tried as an adult and be held at the Pima County jail, noting that he turns 18 in four months. The request was granted.
Arias’ defense attorney described the teen as a straight-A student with no prior arrests or behavioral issues at school. The attorney asked that he be released to his parents.
Instead, bail was set at $200,000.
