Name drop 1970s-80s singer-songwriter Neil Diamond and someone invariably will start singing the chorus of 鈥淪weet Caroline,鈥 throwing in that iconic 鈥渂a, ba, ba鈥 mimicking the toot, toot, toot horn line.
Imagine hearing that amplified by a theater audience of thousands singing along when brings to Centennial Hall next week.
鈥淲e start singing 鈥楽weet Caroline鈥 at the end of Act One and people are clapping, people are singing,鈥 said Joe Caskey, who plays the young Neil Diamond; another actor plays the 鈥渘ow鈥 version of the legendary songwriter, who is 84. 鈥淚鈥檝e happened to watch the conductor cam just to stay with the band, to just make sure I鈥檓 on time because everyone鈥檚 so riled up about it and singing along.鈥

鈥淪weet Caroline鈥 is one of more than 30 songs you鈥檒l hear in the jukebox musical as the storyline recounts Diamond鈥檚 musical life from his Brooklyn boyhood to his global stardom.
鈥淚t鈥檚 one of the most brilliant jukebox musicals that鈥檚 ever been written,鈥 Caskey said. 鈥淚 really think that 鈥楢 Beautiful Noise鈥 does an amazing job of listening to Neil, listening to what he said and put into his songs, and putting it to essentially a really dramatic play that tells his life in such a unique way, in the way that only Neil and his material could possibly tell it.鈥

Joe Caskey will be in the role of young Neil Diamond when 鈥淎 Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical鈥 comes to Centennial Hall next week.
Diamond鈥檚 memoir unfolds through a series of therapy sessions as the singer works through the 2018 Parkinson鈥檚 diagnosis that ended his touring career.
While the older folks in Centennial Hall will relate to Diamond鈥檚 music, Caskey said his generation might initially summon 1970s-80s adult contemporary when they hear 鈥淪ong Sung Blue,鈥 鈥淚鈥檓 A Believer,鈥 鈥淵ou Don鈥檛 Bring Me Flowers鈥 and 鈥淐racklin鈥 Rosie.鈥
But as the show goes on with songs including 鈥淚 Am, I Said,鈥 鈥淪hilo鈥 and 鈥淟ook Out (Here Comes Tomorrow),鈥 even audience members young enough to be Diamond鈥檚 grandchildren will find something relatable in his music, Caskey said.

Nick Fradiani plays Neil Diamond in 鈥淎 Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical.鈥 His understudy Joe Caskey will be in the role when the show comes to Tucson next week.
鈥淗e really laid into rock overtones and ... really is much more electric than his persona typically would dictate from my generation,鈥 said the 26-year-old Keller, Texas, native. 鈥淚 think for people my age, coming into it with an open mind and experiencing Neil for who he was and who he is continuing to be, I think it鈥檚 more relatable than anything else I鈥檝e seen on stage. It鈥檚 so vulnerable, it鈥檚 so electric in every way that we can relate to.鈥
Caskey is one of the newest cast members to the show, which has been touring since last fall. He came on six weeks ago as the young Neil understudy and did six shows as lead when the show stopped in Cincinnati. He鈥檚 doing the Tucson run to fill in for lead Nick Fradiani.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a whirlwind. I鈥檝e never done anything like this,鈥 said Caskey, whose career has included working mostly regional theater. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just been so much fun to actually get to grow with the show for a longer period of time and getting to work with this amazing cast and creative team. Everything has just been a dream come true.鈥
Caskey will be on the tour through next May.
