Melissa Etheridge was teetering on a musical rut in 1993.
鈥淚 sort of felt like I had plateaued,鈥 she recalled during a phone call from a Las Vegas concert stop late last month. 鈥淚 had done three albums and they all kind of did the same. I was played on rock and roll radio, but rock and roll radio was changing. There was this thing called grunge coming in and it was alternative. It was this kind of weird time period.鈥
So Etheridge, 57, returned to her rock music comfort zone, the place that birthed her career just a few years earlier in rock clubs around Boston and Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, and recorded 鈥淵es I Am,鈥 an album that turned her career upside down.
鈥淚 remember thinking, 鈥榃ow, I just got to go back to my roots, rock and roll. I鈥檓 going to write some songs, play 鈥榚m鈥,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why 鈥業鈥檓 the Only One鈥 comes from a rocking, bluesy, old Muddy Waters sort of rhythm. That was really my intention, to get back to my guitar, my 12-string, and just play.鈥

On Sunday, Sept. 16, Etheridge will open her 鈥淵es I Am鈥 25th anniversary tour at Fox Tucson Theatre, a tour that will take her to a dozen cities through mid-October. Her Tucson show is her only one in 蜜聊直播.
鈥淵es I Am鈥 was the turning point in Etheridge鈥檚 career. The record propelled her into the mainstream with a Top 30 hit from the first single 鈥淐ome to My Window,鈥 which earned her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance in 1995; and a Top 10 hit with the followup, 鈥淚鈥檓 the Only One.鈥
The record happily exceeded Etheridge鈥檚 expectations, selling 6 million-plus copies to date.
鈥淵ou hope that it will do well,鈥 she said. And when it did, 鈥淚 truly enjoyed that.
鈥淵ou celebrate that. My old record company, Universal, said they are releasing a remastered 鈥榊es I Am鈥 and then they are going to release some of the demos, the songs that didn鈥檛 make it on the album. It鈥檚 kind of a fun new thing. It鈥檚 good to celebrate.鈥
Etheridge said she will perform every cut off 鈥淵es I Am鈥 鈥 鈥淭here are only 10,鈥 she noted 鈥 starting with the second song, 鈥淚f I Wanted To.鈥 The album opens with 鈥淚鈥檓 the Only One,鈥 and 鈥渢hat鈥檚 too big to start the show,鈥 she said.
She鈥檒l also weave in cuts off from some of her 14 other studio albums including her sophomore record 鈥淏rave and Crazy鈥 and 1995鈥檚 鈥淵our Little Secret鈥 . She likely won鈥檛 draw from her most recent album, 2016鈥檚 bluesy 鈥淢emphis Rock and Soul.鈥
Performing 鈥淵es I Am鈥 doesn鈥檛 resonate the same today as it did 25 years ago, but Etheridge said there are still songs on that album that take her to another place and time.
鈥淚 can just absolutely jump up and have so much fun with those songs. They become memories. They are a moment we are remembering, key memories. It鈥檚 so much fun to do those songs with the audience,鈥 she said.
